US Moves to Ban TikTok
The US House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved a bill that could pave the way for a total ban on TikTok, marking a significant move in social media regulation. The legislation, spearheaded by Texas Republican Michael McCaul, aims to shield Americans from potential Chinese influence and data privacy threats.
Extended Divestment Deadline and Foreign Policy Ties:
The bill, part of a broader foreign aid package, extends ByteDance's divestment period from six months to a year. Senate expected to vote on the bill next week, with President Joe Biden signalling support.
National Security and Data Privacy Debates:
Concerns over Chinese government influence prompt push for TikTok ban. Critics argue ByteDance's ties to China could compromise user data and content moderation.
TikTok's Defense and Economic Impact:
TikTok maintains independence from Chinese authorities and emphasizes its contributions to the US economy. Critics decry potential infringement on free speech rights and economic repercussions. Amidst escalating tensions, the fate of TikTok hangs in the balance as lawmakers grapple with national security, data privacy, and economic implications.
Garcia Upsets Haney, But Weight Miss Costs Him WBC Title
Despite a dominant performance, Ryan Garcia will not claim the WBC super-lightweight title due to missing the weight limit.
In a stunning upset at the Barclays Center, Garcia (25-2) knocked down his American rival Devin Haney (31-1) three times throughout the fight. However, Garcia's weight miss of 3.2lbs disqualified him from winning the championship belt held by Haney.
Prior to the fight, concerns surrounded Garcia's mental state and recent behaviour. However, he silenced the doubters, showcasing impressive power and resilience. Two judges awarded Garcia the victory with scores of 115-109 and 114-110, while the third judge scored it a draw at 112-112.
Looking Ahead
This victory marks Garcia's second win in a row since his sole professional defeat to Gervonta Davis. Haney, on the other hand, suffers his first professional loss after a previously undefeated record of 31 wins.
Both fighters expressed their desire for a rematch, with Haney emphasizing his championship status due to Garcia's weight miss.
